Disease
In the breed Standard Schnauzer, a variant in the TSEN54 gene has been found to cause Leukodystrophy (LD). Affected puppys are smaller compared to healthy puppies and show progressive neurological signs such as dysphagia, tetraparesis, ataxia, tonic-clonic seizures or sudden death. In previous described cases, affected puppies had to be euthanized because of the severity of symptoms.
Histological findings were a severe bilateral symmetric lack of myelin and moderate, diffuse edema in the white matter of the cerebrum.
