Necrotizing Meningoencephalitis (NME)
Disease
Pug dog encephalitis is an inflammatory disease of the brain, that is genetically transferred in pugs. This auto-immune disease appears to have no infectious cause, but results from a genome driven immune-response, which attacks cells of the central nervous system.
First symptoms usually appear at the age of six months to three years and include disorientation, instability and seizures. Affected dogs hold their head tilted to one side or shake their heads, they wobble, show an unsteady gait, stumble and fall. Some walk in circles without being able to stop or scratch the head in an attempt to release pressure and pain. Last dementia and coma occur. Dogs with encephalitis die 3-6 months after the onset of symptoms.
Breed
Pug
Trait of inheritance
autosomal-recessive with variable penetrance;
The genetic test identifies a mutation, which represents a major risk factor for the development of the disease.
Test duration
1-2 weeks after arrival of the sample in the lab
Material
The DNA test is performed out of EDTA blood or buccal swabs. Required swabs can be ordered free of charge. (Buccal swab order-form). If a swab is sent in, possibly the genetic material is not sufficient to run the test. In this case it would be best to send in an EDTA blood sample.
Testing procedure
Please send in your sample together with the lab order genetic. Results will be transmitted optionally via post, fax or email. After completion of the test you will receive a separate invoice. Payment can be made via credit card or bank transfer.
Breeding club discounts apply if a copy of the membership card is sent together with the respective samples. Due to administrative reasons the invoiced price can not be altered subsequently
