Disease
Naked foal syndrome (NFS) is a genodermatosis in the Akhal-Teke horse breed. Affected horses have almost no hair and show a mild ichthyosis. They often die within days to months after birth. However, the reason for these early deaths is not known, and some hairless foals have survived up to 2.5 yr. The first records of hairless Akhal-Teke foals date back to 1938, and since then the number of such foals has increased steadily. Many horses with NFS might have been registered as stillborn or weak born, or not been reported at all.
