A third gene (KRT71) is responsible for curly or non-curly coat in dogs and inherited independently from both other genes concerning the coat length. The mutation is a dominant one, so in breeds where the coat can be either curly or non-curly, it is possible for a curly dog to carry the non-curly trait.
