Заболевание
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is characterized by a slowly progressive degenerative change of the mitral valve, leading to mitral valve prolapse, regurgitation and consequently congestive heart failure due to fluid accumulation in the lungs.
The breeds Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Dachshunds exhibit an early-onset form of this disease and therefore greater cardiac morbidity and mortality compared to other breeds. A variant in the NEBL-gene is associated with an increased risk of developing this early-onset form. Dogs homozygous for the risk factor are more likely to be diagnosed with MMVD in early life compared to heterozygous dogs.
